Mackie finishes Broadway mid-2027 before returning to film, but his personal timeline doesn’t prove a release delay.
Anthony Mackie has a message for Marvel: don’t expect him back on the Avengers: Secret Wars set until sometime after his Broadway run wraps. Speaking to Deadline, the actor explained that once he finishes his commitment to Macbeth in New York, he will “go to finish up all the Avengers stuff for Secret Wars.”
The internet, predictably, has interpreted this as evidence the film is doomed. GamesRadar’s headline suggested the scheduling makes the reported 17 December 2027 release date “more unlikely than ever.” But what Mackie actually said is considerably more limited than that breathless reading implies, and the distinction matters.
An Actor’s Schedule Is Not a Production Schedule
Here is what Mackie’s comment establishes: he personally will not be available to film until after his Broadway commitment ends. GamesRadar reports that his Macbeth run extends from February through July 2027, which means a July return would leave approximately five months until the reported December release.
Here is what it does not establish: when his Avengers work actually begins, how much work remains, whether he needs to film before Broadway as well, or what the full production timeline looks like.
One actor’s availability is not the same as a production’s completion date. Studios regularly schedule cast members’ individual shooting windows around external commitments. The fact that Mackie will finish his Broadway work in July does not mean Secret Wars filming concludes then, does not mean principal photography has not already begun, and does not mean post-production will fail to finish by December.
What “Finish” Actually Means
Mackie’s word choice is equally revealing in what it does not say. He used the word “finish,” not “start” or “begin.” This suggests he already has material either in the can or partially shot, and will be returning to complete his portions, whether that’s final weeks of principal photography, reshoots, or actor pick-ups. That is a normal part of film production, particularly on projects this scale, where actors’ schedules frequently require staggered or split shooting commitments.
The original GamesRadar report helpfully noted that Mackie could have filmed substantial scenes before his Broadway obligation begins in February, making his post-July return merely the tail end of his involvement. That possibility is entirely consistent with his language.
Five Months Is Not an Unreasonable Timetable
The gap between July 2027 and 17 December 2027 has attracted alarm, but it is worth context. Modern blockbuster post-production routinely happens in shorter windows. Visual effects, editing, sound mixing, colour grading and final compositing can proceed while principal photography concludes. A July return for an actor does not delay the final cut by five months.
What makes the timeline worth watching is not Mackie’s personal schedule but rather whether Marvel and Disney have publicly confirmed that 17 December target remains firm. The Los Angeles Times reported that December date, but Disney’s official Marvel announcements have stated only that Secret Wars will arrive in 2027, leaving room for flexibility.
The Real Signal
If there is genuine cause to monitor here, it is not Mackie’s Broadway run. It is whether Marvel subsequently announces a delay or a revised date. Actors’ external commitments are scheduled around films all the time. A mid-year Broadway engagement for one cast member does not sink a December release.
Mackie’s honesty is actually refreshing in an industry that usually keeps production timelines opaque. But his comment tells us about his own situation, not the film’s fate. The December date remains the target unless Disney says otherwise.
